If you, a family member, or a loved one has blocked arteries, otherwise known as coronary heart disease, then you are not alone. There are many persons suffering from this heart condition worldwide, but fortunately, there is triple bypass surgery to correct it. Individuals interested in receiving this form of treatment must consult their doctor to find out what type of bypass surgery they require. The type of bypass surgery afflicted persons will need depends on how many arteries they have blocked. If there is only one artery blocked, they will they will more likely, than not require coronary artery bypass surgery. However, when there are more than one arteries blocked, either a triple bypass surgery or a quadruple bypass surgery will have to be performed. A physician will be able to inform clients more once they have been given tests.

The first bypass surgery was performed on May 2, 1960, at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Bronx Municipal Centre, by Dr. Robert Goetz, Dr. Michael Rohman, Dr. Jordan Haller and Dr. Ronald Dee. A triple bypass surgery can take up to about 4 to 6 hours, after which, the patient will be placed under general anaesthesia. After a patient receives triple bypass surgery, they will be released from the hospital in 5 to 7 days if the surgery goes well. They will then need to undergo recovery at home for about 2 to 4 weeks before returning to their daily routines of work or school. After recovery, it may take 6 to 12 months before a patient feels 100 per cent again. However, after patients receive triple bypass surgery, their blood will begin to flow to the heart again, thus making them healthier than they were before.

To prepare for surgery, follow the specific instructions of your doctor leading up to the surgery. These instructions will include dietary changes or activity restrictions that are necessary in getting ready for surgery. Patients will also have to undergo several pre-surgery tests which will often include chest x-rays, blood tests, and electrocardiogram and a coronary angiogram–a special type of x-ray procedure that uses dye to help doctors see arteries better. Patients will likely be admitted to the hospital on the day of the surgery, but that is not always what happens, so those who will be doing the surgery should inquire about these arrangements.

Feelings of nervousness, unpredictability, and loss are common emotions that will be present in both the patient and their loved ones. These feelings are all normal and it is reassuring to let a patient know that they will be undergoing one of the most common surgeries in the United States of America. Bypass surgeries are performed everyday in every state of the country a with a very high survival rate. Whether triple bypass surgery is necessary because of a poor diet that has clogged up arteries, or because it is in their genes to inherit heart conditions, both are reasonable explanations for going through with the procedure.
